To help prevent such accidents, it’s important to have a pool gate that complies with NF P90-306, in addition to your fence. Why is this so crucial?
The standard requires that the gate has a two-step opening mechanism and can be quickly opened by an adult. A five-year-old should not be able to climb over or through it. The minimum height is regulated and must be at least 1.10 meters (about 43 inches) from the ground.
Installing an alarm is a good idea, but it should complement—not replace—a protective barrier. By the time an alarm sounds and someone responds, there could already be serious consequences.

Be sure to install your pool gate at least 1 meter (about 39 inches) from the pool edge. Avoid placing objects near the fence or gate that could be used to climb over. Some gates can be set in concrete, while others are designed for surface mounting.
According to building codes, if you have a private in-ground pool, you must install one of the following: a barrier, an alarm, a shelter, or a cover. The fence and gate must be installed at least 1 meter (about 39 inches) from the pool, with no footholds that could help someone climb over.
